Carpentry

Carpentry is where it started. Peter spent fifteen years as a carpenter for a builder in Rijswijk. Sticking doors in old houses are still his favourite job, because it’s often the hinge rather than the door.

Doors

In the city centre and in the 1930s houses of Hof van Delft, doors often stick because of settling or damp. Peter looks at the hinges first. Swapping one screw for a longer one often does the trick.

He only planes when he really has to. Afterwards he paints the bare edge again, otherwise the wood soaks up moisture and the door sticks again next autumn.

Small jobs

Fixing skirting boards, a stair gate for the grandchildren, a bookshelf on a wall that isn’t straight, a fence board that blew loose in the last storm. Hanging a new internal door or cutting a cat flap into the back door is part of it too.

Questions about carpentry

Does Peter build made-to-measure cupboards?

No, a cabinet maker is better at that. Assembling a flat-pack cupboard and fixing it safely to the wall, he does do.

Do I need to buy the new door myself?

You can, but measure carefully. Old doors in Delft often aren’t a standard size. Peter can come and measure first, which is free if he hangs the door afterwards.

Our front door had been sticking for two winters. Peter sorted it in half an hour and explained why it got worse every autumn. Sixty-five euros, as agreed.
